Are you ready for the change as we all become connected?

Hollywood has for years made the control of unique utilities look easy via a pc, by just tapping into the network. Reality can be suspended when watching a film but technology has evolved to such an extent that much of what you now see on screen will actually be feasible for most industries and cities over the next few years.

A better connected world will impact most verticals as connection through IT should improve efficiencies of service and user experience. The change has already started in some of our larger cities and with industries such as Manufacturing and Transport leading the way.

Traditional Operational Technology (OT) systems have been typically separate from information technology (IT) due to the specific requirements of real time execution and environmental challenges, forcing the need for differing lines of business management to exist with, historically, little sharing of business requirements and investment strategies. However with the rapid improvements in infrastructure and embedded intelligence throughout the network, the opportunity for IT and OT to converge is technically possible forcing business leaders to now review and integrate strategies.

Cisco has been one of the first vendors to recognise this shift in focus and connect-ability and that there will be a need for cross -skilling between what has been traditionally IT or OT environments. This is very evident in their introduction of a Cisco Certified Network Associate Certification for Industrial.

Cisco Certified Network Associate for Industrial

The Cisco Certified Network Associate Industrial (CCNA Industrial) certification is for plant administrators, control system engineers and traditional network engineers in the manufacturing, process control, and oil and gas industries, who will be involved with the convergence of IT and Industrial networks. This certification provides candidates the necessary skills to successfully implement and troubleshoot the most common industry standard protocols while leveraging best practices needed for todays connected networks.

Combining theoretic knowledge with practical lab exercises, this curriculum provides the real-world skills that allow IT and OT professionals to ensure that their current infrastructures are maximised while developing a converged platform for flexibility to support future business outcomes.

Required Exam Recommended Training
200-120 CCNA Cisco CCNA Routing and Switching Boot Camp (CCNAX)
200-401 IMINS2 Managing Industrial Networks for Manufacturing with Cisco Technologies (IMINS2)

100-101 ICND1 Introduction to Cisco Network Devices Part 1 (ICND1)
200-401 IMINS2 Managing Industrial Networks for Manufacturing with Cisco Technologies (IMINS2)

200-401 IMINS Managing Industrial Networks with Cisco Networking Technologies (IMINS)
200-601 IMINS2 Managing Industrial Networks for Manufacturing with Cisco Technologies (IMINS2)

CCNA Industrial is just a starting point, the impact to the organisation will be significant as it's not just about making sure the technology integrates; there is a significant requirement to address the skills and cultural aspects of all personnel impacted. Who will take the lead in this shift in operational and business integration will it be IT? Already experienced in the management and implementation of advanced governance systems this group would appear to be the lead choice but, there would need to be a fundamental shift in the knowledge of IT staff to understand OT systems and how these integrate with infrastructure and central IT management systems.
